Scripture for Saturday 12/16 ~ Uppity

The scripture for today, December 16 (12/16), is Romans 12:16 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

0000-BK 1-StarSong-CHILD'SCartoonCover-Medium“Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.”

Who do we associate with? Just people who are like us?

Do we consider people richer than us as greedy, uncaring and uppity? And people poorer than us as lazy, users and lowlifes?

Do we consider people smarter than us as having their heads in the clouds? And people duller than us as incapable of understanding anything important?

Do we consider people stronger than us as egotistical show-offs? And people weaker than us as not worthy of notice?

How this hurts our Savior who died for them as well as you. We are all sinners. We all need the same saving grace.

Let us live in harmony with all. Let us make everyone ~ both those “above” us and “below” us ~ feel the love of God through us. And equal.

Scripture for Thursday, November 2 (11/2)

The scripture for today, November 2  (11/2), is Proverbs 11:2 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

0-BK 2-DreamMaker-cover-kindle-medium-new“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”

The word “disgrace” comes from Hebrew qalon meaning confusion. It is also translated dishonor and reproach.

Pride is so hard to control. With the church or clubs or other organizations, we think our ideas, our points of view, our ways of doing things are the right ideas views and ways.  We accuse others of not cooperating if something is our ideas, views, and ways they don’t go along with. It is so hard to give up our ideas views and ways for the sake of peace.

Even in doing daily business, our pride shows up. We become impatient with clerks in stores who do not help us, with other drivers on the road who are too slow or fast for us, with people delivering things to our homes who do not deliver them right to our door, with kids throwing rocks at things that belong to us, people who try to cut in line ahead of us, fellow workers who take credit for our work, and on and on.

It is hard to sit by and let others be praised when we do better work than they do, or we work harder than they do, or they get the promotion we deserve.

How do we control our pride? Perhaps by comparing ourselves, not with others around us, but with Jesus. In the same circumstance, what did he do?

Scripture for Saturday, July 8 (7/8)

The scripture for today, July 8 (7/8), is Ecclesiastes 7:8 as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

Bible Puzzles for Young And Old-Cover“The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.”

Years ago, there was a little boy who belonged to the Pee-Wee Baseball League. A lot of teams played in different parts of a very large ball field. He would get in line to wait his turn to bat the ball. But he’d become impatient, feeling he should be able to bat as often as he wanted.

So, he’d take off across the field and get in the line of another team, hoping his turn at bat would come sooner. When he didn’t go to bat as soon as he thought he should, he’d take off across the field in yet another direction and get in the line of yet another team, hoping his turn at bat would come sooner.

After doing all that, he’d finally give up and come back to his own team. By that time, if he had just stayed in line with his own team, he could have come up to bat two or three times. His pride got in the way, his impatience got in the way, and he ended up losing all his turns.

What we hope and dream for may happen today, or a year from now, a decade from now. Let us learn to wait for our turn.

Scripture for Thursday, April 6 (4/6)

UPDATE ON OUR BROTHER WHO DARED TEACH WHERE IT IS ILLEGAL. I heard from him last night. He said they are moving in on him. Made two more threatening phone calls. He has gone into hiding far from his wife and children to keep them protected. (It is common among extremists to kidnap the children if a bribe is not paid and threaten to either kill them or make them slaves.) He may lose his job that he just started a week ago. Keep praying mightily for him and his family until you hear back from me. He may be in hiding a month or two.

Cover-Kindle-smallThe scripture for today, April 6, is 1st Corinthians 4:6 as found in the New Testament of the Bible:

“…learn from us the meaning of the saying, ‘Do not go beyond what is written.’ Then you will not take pride in one man over against another.”

Periodically through the Bible, there appears this same warning for us to not “go beyond what is written.” 1st Corinthians 13:8 says prophecy and other spiritual gifts were going to end. 2nd Peter 1:20 says prophecy is scripture. Prophecy was needed before the New Testament was written, but no more after that, for now the prophecy of the apostles had been written down.

It is important to find out if what we are being taught is “beyond what is written.” It can be done. How? Simple. Use a concordance. A concordance is the size of a large dictionary and includes every word in the Bible and every scripture that contains each word. Many libraries have one. Or you can order one from your local bookstore. There are some concordances on the internet too. Here is one: http://bibletab.com

You are an intelligent person. Don’t take for granted what others tell you. Check things for yourself. Read the Bible for yourself. Decide for yourself whether any of your church leaders have gone “beyond what is written.” You can do it. And you will be liberated by what you learn.

Scripture for Sunday, April 2 (4/2)

UPDATE ON OUR BROTHER WHOSE LIFE HAS BEEN THREATENED:

In March, another brother in Iraq was threatened with imprisonment for being anti-Islamic. He was summoned to court and asked us, “Pray that I do not denounce Jesus, my Lord.” Hundreds of Christians prayed for him.  The judge threw the case out. (Prayer is so powerful.)

I asked that brother if he had any advice for his brother in Afghanistan. Among other things, he said, “You must also know that the one who defends you is Christ himself and that all those who confront you will be afraid of you. And you should know that the prayer that Mum Katheryn and all of us will make miracles. Therefore, Rejoice, then rejoice and rejoice. Because you will prevail.”

So, John Mark, though still very frightened, decided to face the jaws of the lion head on. He decided to go back to work and try to act normal (though his family is still in hiding). He wrote me last night, “Dear Mum I am fine and went to work today.  No one catches me.”

Keep praying. Prayer is so powerful.

00-Heroes-Alone-COVER-KINDLEThe scripture for today, April 2, is Exodus 4:2f as found in the Old Testament of the Bible:

“Then the Lord said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ ‘A staff,’ he replied.”

God had just called Moses to go to Egypt and free his people from their slavery ~ one man against an entire nation. Moses objected that he couldn’t do it. Five times In Exodus 3 and 4 he argued with God. “BUT I’m not famous,” “BUT they won’t believe I come from the God of their ancestors,” “BUT they won’t believe God sent me, “BUT I’m not a good speaker,” “JUST send someone else.”

Then God replied, “What is that in your hand?”.

Moses had a staff. God showed him how to use it to perform miracles. Today, are you using excuses to claim there is nothing you can do for the cause of God and salvation? God challenges you: “What is that in your hand?” It is a steering wheel, a shovel, thread, a computer, a spoon, a wrench, a cookbook, a band aid, a Bible? Whatever is in your hand, God can use to bless people through you.

You are God’s hands and feet and mouth.  Use them.  Today.
